A Network for Adoptees
For adoptees growing up, 'adoption' in the house-hold was typically a taboo topic. No One talked about it. And if it was talked about, it was usually on our adoptive parents terms on the rareoff chance they brought it up. When they did bring it up, suddenly our hearing became more acute than a dog's sense of smell while we cooley hinged on every single word hoping to gain even the tiniest clue of our mysterious past..
Reunion
The Truth:
Some of the most common curiosities an adoptee wonders about is, what will meeting my biological mother be like? How will I make contact? What type of person is she?
If you have already reconnected you may know what I'm about to say. And even if this is the case, it may be cool to know you're not the only adoptee in town with the above curiosities..
Search..Discovery..
Oh My!
Some of us search like a 4th of July parade with little care who knows about the search. Some search quietly, barely registering a blip on the radar, while other adoptees search like a diligent mouse working under the cover of night.
Legislative Reform
We are a local legislative task force striving for equality for adoptees. A handful of adpotees in RIARG are the same adoptees who advocated and worked on behalf of the legislation, the new law, that now allows RI Adoptees to obtain their original birth certificate (OBC).
Network/Support
RIARG absolutely offers a chat group for social support,
we meet up once a month, typically the 3rd Thursday of the month at a local coffee place. Meeting places rove around so you will have to stay in the know as a RIARG member to receive email notifications.
12/16/14 2bl Feature Event: Featuring film maker Anthony Demings (adoptee) showing a screening of his film "Children of the Asylum" (back left center); and a presentation by Jeff LaCure (psychologist/SW) (adoptee) (Back right center)
Are you a sibling to a RI adoptee and searching for your adopted sibling? Or, are you a RI adoptee searching for your sibling?
Subsequent to the recent law change allowing adoptees to access their original birth certificate and with adoptees finally in possession of thier names of their orignal parent(s), it doesn't mean the adoptee is on easy street.
There are many obstacles an Adoptee will likely face as they search.
